Everyone Is Diverse

Are you diverse?  Do you consider yourself an individual?

Is there anyone else in this existence exactly like you?  Nope.

We are all unique.  Everyone is their own person with their own life, experiences, and backgrounds.  Each person has had different and unique perspectives on each second of their life.

You and your friend are watching the same event unfold right in front of your eyes, but both of you are seeing the event completely differently.  You are standing next to each other, but you have a different angle on the scene.  Both of you are using your backgrounds to decipher what is happening, how the people involved are feeling and what they are thinking, and what you would do next if you were them.

Each individual on your team is unique as well.  You may all have similar education and experiences.  You may all be engineers, in fact, you may all be the same type of engineer.  You may have worked your way up and through the same industry to be where you are today.  These experiences are not the same though.  Did you all go to the same university; at the same time?  Did you all work for the same companies within this same industry?  Did you have the same co-workers, managers, projects, or customers?  Not even close.

We are just referring to everyone’s career difference, now think about their private life, family, beliefs, part of the world they are from, or generation they grew up in.  Every aspect of an individual’s life shapes and forms their perspective on everything.

As a leader, can you benefit from all of these different insights and perspectives?  Problem solvers know the importance of getting as much data and information on a topic as they can.  This is what diversity is doing for you; giving you more data and information on whatever you are working on.

This is why it is so important to get to know your team.  Learn from them, and learn about them.  Your teammates are valuable resources.  The most valuable resource you and your business have.  What makes them so valuable is their diversity and uniqueness.

Everyone is unique.  Every person has a unique and interesting perspective on the world around them.  Embrace their uniqueness for a positive, successful team.  Diversity is what makes your team valuable.
